Manna Lizards are winged miniature spell-casting dragons, favored by magicians and adventurers as pets. Manna Lizards are classified by Stage of Life and Variety (color). Manna Lizards have a primitive chirping language that they use among themselves. The most intelligent varies can be taught tricks by intelligent beings and can learn to respond to other languages. Gold Manna Lizards, also known as Queens, can usually command other Manna Lizards, except Silver and Platinum Manna Lizards. Platinum Manna Lizards, also known as Magi (singular Magus), are extremely rare, and can usually command Silver Manna Lizards. Silver and Platinum Manna Lizards tend not to associate with Brown, Green, Blue, Red, or Purple Manna Lizards. Mature Gold, Platinum, and Silver Manna Lizards have a good understanding of magic and are valued at teachers providing unusual insights to their students. |
These modifiers are applied with the stage of life (after the hatchling stage) values.

When hatched Manna Lizards, start with a craving for manna, usually provided by its parents (or impresser) at 1 PP per day, which is the maximum consumption rate allowed. If someone besides its parents provide the manna, it will impress to them establishing a special bond. To support the internal life force, 0.5 PP per day goes to substance, and the remainder goes to growth. If a day goes by with no manna provided, 0.5 PP is taken from the growth amount up to half the total PPs in growth. After this, the Manna Lizard Hatchling dies. When the growth reaches 50 PPs, the Manna Lizard enters the next stage of life, Young Lizard. It does this by a complete shedding of its skin over a two-day period. Hatchlings are all pale brown and only gain the appropriate color and benefits when they become Young Lizards.
In this stage of life, the Manna Lizard absorbs 1 PP per day from its surroundings, if possible. If not, it will seek manna from the creature that provided it during the Hatchling stage. To support the internal life force, 0.5 PP per day goes to substance, and the remainder goes to growth. If a day goes by with no manna available or provided, 0.5 PP is taken from the growth amount up to half the total PPs in growth. When the growth reaches 100 PPs, the Manna Lizard enters the next stage of life, Immature Lizard. It does this by a complete shedding of its skin over a two-day period. These are two levels of intelligence less than matures as given in the Varieties of Manna Lizard table.
In this stage of life, the Manna Lizard provides its own manna for its life forces, enabling it to survival in places with no manna being available. There are ten levels for immature lizards (I-1 through I-10, each level adding certain capabilities to it, Each level is progressed after a certain amount of total growth in PP and is marked by a two-day skin shedding. It may add only 1 PP per day for growth. These are one level of intelligence less than matures as given in the Varieties of Manna Lizards table.
In this stage of life, the Manna Lizard has finished it physical growth and is capable of reproduction. Mature Lizards also gain the ability to learn spell lists up to their level + 5 and cast them with no prep and no spell static maneuver roll. Each level is progressed after a number of experience points being gained by the Mature Lizard. Mature Lizards can store up to 2 PP/Level internally for future use.
Note: A Manna Lizard never progresses backwards even if the growth PPs are reduced.
Note that these are modified by variety of mana lizard modifiers as well.

The (A/B) follwing the number of lists indicates the number of lists maximum that are closed (A), and base (B). The total includes all lists, whether open, closed, or base. This is further limited by the Manna Lizard variety. This includes Essence lists as well as Arcane Lists when the Manna Lizard can learn them.
Maximum Effective Level limits the overall power points and the number of lists that can be learnt. Manna Lizards continue to earn DPs by gaining experience.
New DP is the number of new DP (with variety adjustment applied) earned by the Manna Lizard for achieving a new level. DP can be accumulated over many levels. The costs of the different types and levels of spell as listed in the Spell List Cost table.

Mature manna lizards can reproduce. The females (gold & green) will tend to have one mating flight per year where the most able male will prove himself in pursuit and then copulate. This results in a clutch 95% of the time for golds and 25% of the time for greens. The female is magically drained for two days due to exertion of laying the clutch and endowing the eggs with PPs to survive until hatching. In addition, no Platinum nor Silver Manna Lizard, only 10% of Bronze Manna Lizards, and only 50% of Brown Manna Lizards with attempt to mate a Green Manna Lizard.
Clutch Size: Roll 2d10 and add +d10 if the mother is gold, add +d10 if the father is platinum, and add +2 if the father is bronze or silver to find the number of eggs. If the mother is gold, reroll results less than 8 eggs.
Clutch Contents Modifications based on Fathers Color:
Blue -1, Bronze +1, Platinum +3, Purple -3, Red -2, Silver +2
For each egg in the clutch, roll d10 and apply modification, if any to determine the variety contained within, but only visible after the hatchling stage of life.
| Roll | Gold Mother | Green Mother | Roll | Gold Mother | Green Mother | |
| -2 | Purple | does not hatch | 7 | Brown | Blue | |
| -1 | Red | does not hatch | 8 | Bronze | Blue | |
| 0 | Purple | does not hatch | 9 | Bronze | Green | |
| 1 | Red | does not hatch | 10 | Gold #1 | Brown | |
| 2 | Blue | Purple | 11 | Silver | Brown | |
| 3 | Green | Purple | 12 | Silver | - | |
| 4 | Blue | Red | 13 | Silver | - | |
| 5 | Green | Red | 14+ | Platinum #2 | - | |
| 6 | Brown | Green |
Note #1 - Limit one Gold per clutch - reroll any repeats and add +1 to the roll until egg determined.
Note #2 - Limit one Platinum per clutch - treat any repeat as a Bronze instead.
A clutch, buried in a warm or magical place, takes around 6 weeks to hatch. During which time the parents and possibly other manna lizards will guard it. Exception: about 80% the time if the mother is green, the clutch will be abandoned.
I derived Manna Lizards from the Fire Lizards found in the Dragonriders of Pern series by Anne McCaffrey. Thank you, Anne, for a wonderful series of books.
